The 45
Model
Based on the earliest 45 ‘Deluxe’ models, the Boswell Style 45’s spare nothing. Every piece of wood I currently have in my collection is absolutely top-tier. However, the tone-wood options for the 45’s are the ultimate that I own, quite easily some of the best in the industry. The inlay is as close to perfection as humanly possible, using only the very best and highest quality shell. Each individual inlay utilizes a four step process: the primary abalone piece is cut then inlaid into either pearl or ivory. Next, the exterior of the pearl/ivory is cut leaving a very thin border surrounding the primary abalone shape. Then finally, the combined piece is inlaid into the wood surface. This process adds a much more noticeable definition of detail and precision, allowing every piece to “pop” regardless of the material inlaid into. Of course, the tone and playability are both exactly what you would expect: sublime. The internal structure of the box is a hybrid of the Classic and LTD bracing patterns, the top using a more Classic style scalloped X in conjunction with a LTD style back pattern with the perpendicular reinforcing bar. Rosette, end graft and purfling detail are my own take on the 45 Deluxe from the 1930’s, usually incorporating an element of colored purfling to pull even more depth and reflectivity from the abalone and additional inlay materials. The binding used on the body, fingerboard and peg head overlay is wood, and usually a match to the back and sides. The heel is typically my squared heel carve, and again, all hide glue construction, minus areas where bonding my be a concern (inlay).
